GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

Opened in the late 19thC as an athletics ground, the football pitch was surrounded by an oval running track and by the 1930s stands were in place on both sides of the ground. Hereford United FC commenced playing at Edgar Street on their formation in 1924 and subsequent improvements included the construction of banking at both ends (removing part of the oval track), an additional stand on the west side and a new pitch length stand on the east side.

The record attendance of 18,114 was set at the FA Cup 3rd Round tie v. Sheffield Wednesday (0-3) on January 4th, 1958 and the main stand was removed and sold when a road widening scheme in 1968 forced the club to sell the strip of land on the west side of the site. A new 1,200 seat cantilever roofed main stand was subsequently built on the east side.
Following election to the Football League in 1972 a 1,200 seat cantilever roofed stand was constructed on stilts on the west side of the ground and, in 1989, a 600 seat extension was added to the main stand. The capacity at the start of season 2007/8 was 8,843 with 1,761 seats and the pitch size was 111 x 74 yards.
