Another convergence game and hospo with Matt welcomed along. C&M stayed over at YTB the night before for the early start and we maybe drank a little too much but nothing silly so up bright and bushy tailed for the 08:09 from Whitchurch. This and the next two trains on time and not too crowded. A swift G&T (can) and a couple of ciders (cans) helped the journey along and we arrived Lincoln bob on time.
Easy fifteen minutes stroll to the ground in bright warm sunshine with Matt displaying his ichthyological expertise by pointing out all the different fishes (including a truly massive pike) in the crystal clear waters of Sincil Dike. Then into the Branston Legends lounge just before 13:00.
The lounge itself was far better than expected, the staff all friendly and efficient and the bean burger was okay (I thought so but CJ didn''t like hers). Then upstairs to jolly comfortable seats in the main LNER stand. Disappointing that they didn''t play the air-raid siren and spitfire sounds as the teams came out like they used to (bloody shit-bag killjoy fun-sponge lefty hippy commie queers complaining about glorification of war, duckers!!) but at least we got the Dam Busters march so they can stick that up their Mohne Dam and hopefully drown. Double duckers!!
Good footy but the first half - after a few drinks and in balmy warmth - was tough staying awake. Luckily a hearty stiffener at half-time had the second period passing fully awake and focussed. Then it was one more swift gargle in the lounge before we toddled off to the station pausing at McDonalds for an essential burger that we ate on the train.
Again journey all good despite the long train-change wait at Nottingham but then at Derby around a million Port Vale fans tried to squeeze onto a 3-carriage train. After a long delay and a good deal of upset (not to mention a couple of fights and a lot of police intervention) a 4th carriage was added and we were away: still ram-jam packed and late.
Some 2 hours later (and a good 45 minutes behind schedule we were at Crewe where CJ magicked up an Uber in seconds flat and the very polite Mohammed, driving mostly on the correct side of the road, meandered his way through the dark but scenic Cheshire countryside to get us safely home just before midnight.
16 hours home-to-home but all good fun and a jolly good day out. Especially the joke about the fortune teller and the man buying the puppy.
First time: 3 November 2018
League 2
Opposition: Forest Green Rovers
score: 2-1
crowd: 8.542
French visitors left us at 05:00 and I managed a couple of hours more sleep before heading off to Crewe for my first train (of 6 for the day). Everything spot on time and me feeling less and less ''dead'' as the day went on. Blustery day but mostly bright (esp as I rode into Lincolnshire) and surprisingly mild.
A brief wander around town before an easy 15 minutes stroll to Sincil Bank. This is yet another ''proper old school'' ground with rickety-looking stands and nothing really matching. But the home supporters were committed and noisy and generally good value. Funny even.
Before the team came out they played an air-raid siren and the sounds of WW2 aeroplanes flying over and then played The Dam Busters March as the team came out.
The game itself was very entertaining. Not great quality but fast and furious. The end result (Lincoln winning) was daylight robbery as Forest Green were the better team throughout. But I guess that''s football!! And we cheered the winner like we''d won the Champions League.
Then for me it was a dash back to the station for my 3 trains home. Got home around 21:30 and we were in bed soon after ten. Slept like road kill. Another great adventure tucked under the belt.
