Bristol Rovers vs Gillingham 2 - 1 Date: Sat Nov 21 Venue: Memorial Stadium Attendance: 6210 Referee: K Evans Bristol Rovers 2 Lines (17), Hughes (pen, 81) Gillingham 1 Barcham (40) Goals from Chris Lines and a Jeff Hughes penalty saw Rovers beat Gillingham at the Memorial Stadium this afternoon. Although the visitors got back on level terms after Lines had scored in the 17th minute, Rovers mastered the atrocious conditions far better that Mark Stimson's side and thoroughly deserved to take all three points. Rovers made a positive start to the game and Chris Dickson hit an early effort wide of the target after being played in by Jo Kuffour. Stuart Campbell's quick free kick then caused problems in the Gillingham defence and when the ball was cleared to Danny Coles he volleyed high over the bar. Gillingham's first goal attempt came after ten minutes, but Chris Palmer's long range effort was well wide of the target. Rovers finally made their possession pay off after 17 minutes and after Dickson's acrobatic overhead kick had been palmed away by goalkeeper Simon Royce, the ball was played back in to Chris Lines who calmly sidefooted the ball into the net from 10 yards. Dominic Blizzard made a surging diagonal run , that took him the length of the pitch, before chipping the ball over the bar, but although Rovers continued to dominate they were unable to beat Royce again. Five minutes before the break, they were pegged back when the visitors scored an equaliser that came out of the blue. Andy Barcham was allowed to run, unchallenged, to the edge of the box before he unleashed a ferocious shot that just beat Mikkel Andersen and flew in to the roof of the net. Rovers again made all the running after the break and Kuffour saw a shot blocked by a Gills defender. Andersen did make a comfortable save from Palmer's free kick, but Rovers continued to force the pace without seriously troubling Royce. The keeper easily saved a header from Danny Coles following a Campbell free kick, and then did well to come off his line quickly to deny substitute Darryl Duffy a clear shot on goal. The breakthrough for Rovers came on 81 minutes as Andy Williams chased a long ball down the right and tussled for possession with Matt Fry. The central defender went to ground and, in doing so, handled the ball. Referee Karl Evans pointed to the spot, after his assistant had flagged for handball, and Jeff Hughes maintained his 100% record from 12 yards when he sent Royce the wrong way with his penalty. Not surprisingly, that forced the visitors to finally move forward with more urgency, but all they had to show for a late flurry of action was a shot from substitute Simeon Jackson that was deflected over the bar. The win moved Rovers up to seventh place in the league and now they look forward to taking Charlton on at the Valley on Tuesday evening.
