ASHTON GATE

Ashton Gate has been a League ground
for 107 seasons;
from June 1st, 1904
to the current day .

Ashton Gate was the 70th
ground to be used for a League game.

Current Capacity; 21,479.

Opened in 1896, this was initially the home ground of Bedminster FC, who merged with Bristol City in 1900. However, it was not until 1904 that the amalgamated club finally moved from St John’s Lane to the much larger Ashton Gate.

In the early years there were two stands, Nos 1 and 2, on each side of the pitch and, in the 1920s, a covered terrace was installed at the Winterstoke Road end of the ground. No.1 Stand was destroyed during WWII and ultimately replaced by a new grandstand in the 1950s whilst on the opposite side, the Harry Dolman Stand, with the roof suspended from a cross girder, was completed in 1970. By the end of season 2001/2 a 21,479 capacity all-seater stadium had been created with the construction of a new grandstand, on the site of the old one, and new stands at each end of the ground surrounding the 120 x 75 yards sized pitch.
