The Olive Grove, south of the city centre and adjacent to the south east side of the Midland Railway main line, was little more than a 3.5 acre swamp when The Wednesday FC moved here from Endcliffe in 1887. By the time that they played their first match, against Blackburn Rovers on September 12th, 1887, the land had been drained, a stream diverted, a full length open 1,000 seat stand installed on the narrow northwest side and flat cinder surfaces for standing spectators provided around the other three sides. At this time players changed in a local pub but later improvements included the provision of a pavilion, installation of covering over part of the main stand, an uncovered seating stand behind the north goal and a covered enclosure at the south west end.
