Located on the south side of Deane Road, west of the town centre, Bolton Wanderers FC moved in to the 4.5 acre enclosure in 1880, the first match being played against Great Lever FC on September 10th. The arena was almost square in shape with shallow embankments on each side and later improvements included the installation of a covered grandstand on the north side, two wooden terraces at the east end and the construction of dressing rooms.
The record attendance of 20,000 was set at the FA Cup 3rd Round tie v. Liverpool (3-0) on February 24th, 1894. The club moved to Burnden Park in 1895, but poor pitch conditions at the new ground forced the reserves to continue playing here for a spell until it was rectified. The site was later redeveloped with housing and the continuation of Bankfield Street.
