The venue was known as Walnut Street when Leicester Fosse FC moved here from their temporary home at Aylestone Road Cricket Ground in 1891. The facilities initially included a stand on the west side and a cover was subsequently installed at the south end.
Following the end of WWI, Leicester City FC, as they were now known, proceeded to redevelop the ground with the construction of a new main stand on the west side and, in 1927 replacement of the cover at the south end (removed and subsequently re-installed at the north end) with a new two tier stand. Within a year the record attendance of 47,298 was set at the FA Cup 5th Round tie v. Tottenham Hotspur on February 18th, 1928 and just before the outbreak of WWII a cover was constructed over the east side.

Although the main stand suffered some damage during WWII and this was rectified by 1949, there were only minor alterations to the ground in the 1970s, with the conversion of the stands on the north and east sides to all-seaters, before the main stand was replaced by a 9,300 seat structure in 1993.
At the end of the 2001/2 season, when the club moved to The Walkers Stadium, the all-seat capacity was only 21,500 with an 110 x 76 yards sized pitch. The site was sold for housing and although a proposal was made to remove the main stand to Rotherham United FCās Millmoor Ground all the buildings were demolished in May 2003 and the site cleared.
