GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

On joining the Football League in 1921, Halifax Town FC moved to The Shay from Exley and purchased the main stand from Manchester City FC’s Hyde Road ground for re-erection on the west side. The only other facilities at this time were embankments around the other three sides and at some stage a cover was installed on the east side. Following the end of WWII, speedway took place between 1948 and 1951 (and later between 1965 and 1985) and the record attendance of 36,885 was set at the FA Cup 5th Round tie v. Tottenham Hotspur (0-3)  on February 14th, 1953. By 1965 only minor improvements had been made with the installation of seats under the cover on the east side and construction of a small amount of terracing on the west side and at the north end.

In conjunction with their joint tenants, Halifax Blue Sox RLFC and the site owners, Calderdale MBC, the 1990s saw the commencement of the rebuilding of The Shay with the removal of the speedway track and construction of covered terraces at both ends and installation of seats on the west side. Erection of a new main stand commenced on the east side in 2000 but a lack of finance led to it still not being completed by the end of the 2001/2 season when the capacity was 9,927 with 1,830 seats and the pitch size was 110 x 76 yards.
