GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

When Swindon Town FC moved to the County Ground in 1895 they played on the cricket ground for one season before moving to a field adjacent to the south side of the venue. The facilities originally included a stand (extended in 1911) on the north side of the pitch whilst some terracing was constructed in 1908. The only major improvement prior to WWII was the installation of cover on the south side and at the west end in the 1930s.

In 1958 the cover on the south side was replaced when a grandstand was acquired from the Aldershot Military Tattoo (NB Accrington Stanley [1] also purchased a stand from here at the same time for re-erection at their Peel Park) and a new 5,300 seat main stand constructed on the north side in 1971 before the record attendance of 32,000 was set at the FA Cup 3rd Round tie v. Arsenal (0-2) on January 15th, 1972. Further alterations were made during the 1990s, including the installation of additional seats at the front of the main stand, the replacement of the stand on the south side with a cantilever roofed 5,030 seat stand and the installation of seats at both ends. The all-seat capacity at the start of the 2007/8 season was 15,700 and the pitch size was 114 x 74 yards.

Go across one roundabout and at the next take the first exit onto Queens Way (Signposted Swindon/Football Traffic). You will see the floodlights of the County Ground over on the right, as you approach the large Magic Roundabout (The boy was on the Ganja when they designed that). The County Ground is on the corner of this roundabout but you have to do first right first left then follow it around then into Shiverham Road. So to avoid the madness take the second exit at Drake Roundabout (Not following football traffic) then take the first left past the college then second left down to the ground.

Turn right up Cooperation Road till you get to a small car showroom turn left into Manchester Road there is signpost to the ground walk to the end of the road, at the junction turn right into County Road. The County Ground is about 400 yards up this road on the left just before the County Hotel.
